The story of Saltacol
Saltacol: also an action puzzle strategy game, it became an instant favorite when I found it earlier this month. Saltacol features excellent level design and gameplay, and just finishing the game (or even a level) is such sweet success. Infinite lives allows you to keep trying, yet the level design ensures that you won't soon put this game down. Excellence in design, physics, graphics, and replay value. Flash games don't get much better than this.
Saltacol is a game I created for Flash back in 2003. It was an instant success — one reliable measure being how thoroughly it was pirated. Thanks to the magic of emulators such as Ruffle, it can still be played today.
Unlike those pirate sites, where old versions of the game are still circulating, this is not just the official Saltacol website: it is also the only place where you can play the v1.1 Special Edition, featuring a total of six levels.
One important detail: the game was designed to be aimed with a mouse, long before touchscreen gaming became commonplace. With a finger, aiming is considerably trickier because your hand tends to obscure the trajectory preview. Please consider that an extra challenge — or, better still, play it on desktop.
Ruffle is still in development, so a few things do not yet work perfectly; sound is the main problem here. On some screens you may prefer to play muted, although in a few places the sound itself is a timing cue for the right moment to jump. Until the Ruffle team sorts that out, patience.
I'd like to fix those glitches myself, but Flash Player reached end of life in 2020, and patching the original game now would mean resurrecting an obsolete Flash-era toolchain. For the moment, the emulation quirks are out of my hands.
